The "general name" for God is El, the abbreviated form of Elohim, usually translated "God" in our English Bibles.  Expressing the general idea of deity, it is used by both genuine believers and pagan worshipers.  For example, El was a common designation for the head of the Canaanite pantheon of gods.  In Scripture it often refers to the sovereignty or power of God.
